"El carácter de los trazos" "My play with brush and ink is notcalligraphy nor painting;yet unknowing people mistakenly think: this is calligraphy, this is painting."Sengai Gibon (1750–1837)
As is done in the classic methods of learning the arts of the brush, we study the work of one of the great masters of the History of Japanese Art. Based on the observation, analysis and repetition of one of the pieces by the Buddhist monk Sengai Gibon 仙厓義梵: Marusankakushikaku 丸三角四角 (circle, triangle, square), also known in the West as "The Universe", we propose specific exercises that allow us to delve into the understanding of each of the brushstrokes that make up this iconic work from the late Edo period. To do so, we focus on the practice of the basic brushstrokes of Sumi-e 墨絵 and Shodo 書道, delving into the study of the character of the strokes, that is, their yin yang condition: dark-light, firm-soft strokes. This intensive course is intended for people with different levels of approach to oriental arts, conceived as a meeting space for practicing brushstrokes, a way of experimenting with ink and brush in the fields of Japanese painting and calligraphy.
