"Born, raised, and educated in an environment and culture that is exclusively "verbal," I PAINT TO DECONDITION MYSELF" Henri Michaux

Sumi-e painting is an ANNIVERSARY PICTORIAL TRADITION of a MONOCHROMATIC nature that starts from the connection and observation of NATURE and seeks to synthesize it through what is called a SINGLE BRUSHSTROKE. A brushstroke characterized by spontaneity and serenity, which does not admit correction and requires CONSCIOUS EXPERIENCE (or in other words, it is about INTERNALIZING THE STROKE). Sumi-e 墨絵 is a Japanese word that means "ink painting" (墨 sumi, ink and 絵 e, drawing or painting) and comes from the ancient tradition of Chinese Painting, like so many other traditional arts of Japan (in fact, the pictorial traditions of Korea and Taiwan also come from the Chinese tradition).
Perhaps, for our learning, it would be more useful to distinguish two aspects within this type of painting. One is PAINTING AS A PRACTICE of active meditation in which the result is not the end, but its own process and where spontaneity and simplicity are evident; and another aspect is ACADEMIC PAINTING, which is a painting that responds to a greater number of rules, with more codes to learn and therefore it is usually a slightly more complex image than the previous one. Both aspects are equally valuable and can be practiced in any country and by any type of person. Luciana Rago
