URAUCHI INTRODUCTION WORKSHOP

Taught by Prof. Luciana Rago

(This workshop is held once per course)

Urauchi is the classic system of mounting a painting and/or calligraphy done on paper made of vegetable fibers (mulberry bark, kozo, etc.) on another paper, using rice or wheat starch paste.

The classics assure that the piece is not finished until this procedure is carried out.

This mounting system provides greater support to the piece, helps highlight the greys, smoothes wrinkles, restores tears and leaves it ready for the mounting chosen for its exhibition.

The main objectives of this introductory workshop are:

1) - Know the basic and easy procedure to prepare paste (from rice or wheat starch).

2) - Acquire the criteria for selecting the paper on which the assembly will be carried out. 3) - Use the appropriate tools and achieve the adaptation of the available techniques and materials.

4) - Use simple strategies to solve specific problems that cause cracks and folds in small-format urauchi.

5) - Contribute to the "loss of fear" of handling wet paper through playful exercises.
