Visit to RED STAR - paper in China

RED STAR 红星, Xuan paper factory-museum (China)

Xuan paper is one of the "four treasures" used in the creation of oriental paintings and calligraphy of monochrome tradition.

Xuan paper is a broad term that indicates its origin and within which there is an enormous variety depending on the number of layers, whether it is raw, semi-raw, cooked paper, whether it is made with mulberry bark, with sandalwood... and many more characteristics that allow us to obtain an unlimited number of expressive resources.

This paper has been used for over 1000 years, which indicates its technological excellence and durability over time.

In October 2023, we visited the Xuan Paper Museum located in Jingxian, Anhui, China. There, we saw the process of creating one of the largest sheets of Xuan paper produced.

Sheets of paper measuring 10x3m, for which 40 workers are needed daily.

We also observed the process of drying, cutting, sealing, preserving and packaging the reams of Xuan paper that are then distributed around the world.

We share some images from a visit that was of great importance to learn about the origins of this paper that all Chinese painters have used throughout these 2000 years of uninterrupted tradition.
