URAUCHI Practical workshop for finishing Sumi-e and Shodo painting LEVEL: beginners TAUGHT BY: Luciana Rago Ferrón. I studied Plastic Arts Teaching (2005) and Visual Arts (2008) at the National University of San Juan, Argentina. In Madrid I completed a Master's Degree in Research and Creation in the Arts (2012) at the Complutense University of Madrid and in this city I began to study traditional Chinese painting with Master Li Chi Pang. Li Chi Pang was undoubtedly the person who taught me the most about this pictorial tradition, but he was not the only one. I also learned important things from other professionals with whom I have studied in different countries. Since 2001 I have been working as a teacher at universities, schools, studios, workshops and since 2012 I have been directing the Creative Shodo study program. I have traveled throughout Spain, Switzerland, Argentina, the Philippines, Japan and China sharing this pictorial tradition that is little known in the West. Her learning of urauchi began with Li Chi Pang, she perfected it with Elena "Hikari" and became a professional with the help of the paper restorer Ana Beny. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION: Urauchi is the classic system of mounting a painting and/or calligraphy done on paper made of vegetable fibers (mulberry bark, kozo, etc.) on another paper, using rice or wheat paste. The classics assure that the piece is not finished until this procedure is carried out. This mounting system provides greater support to the piece, helps to highlight the grays, softens wrinkles, restores tears and leaves it ready for the mounting that is decided for its exhibition. Objectives of this introductory workshop: 1) - Basic and easy knowledge to prepare the paste (rice or wheat) 2) - Selection criteria for the paper on which the mounting will be done. 3) - Use of the basic tools and procedures to make an urauchi on small paper. 4) - Up-to-date information on where to buy materials at the best price. 5) - Strategies to solve specific problems that cause cracks and folds. TARGET AUDIENCE: People who have practiced or are practicing Sumi-e and/or Shodo who wish to finish their pieces using the urauchi system. 1) - If you are a person who has never done an urauchi, you are welcome. 2) - If you have done it "once", have forgotten about it and want/need to practice with an accompaniment because you are afraid to do it at home alone, you are welcome. 3) - If you want a space to delve deeper into this ancient technique that requires a LOT of practice, you are very welcome. MATERIALS that each person must bring: 1) - Three or four paintings/calligraphies done only with ink (no watercolor or gouache) whose size is between approximately A3 (297 x 420 mm) and A4 (210x297mm). Bring good pieces and bad pieces so that you can go through the experience of what to do if the paper breaks. 2) – Bring the panel on which you usually make urauchis and if it is too big and you cannot transport it, find and bring a similar panel on which you can mount the paintings on both sides. This panel must fit the paintings and also have 10 cm of space on each side. If you do not have this panel you can get a methacrylate or a plywood with melamine, the surface could also be absorbent, such as an MDF or similar. A normal chipboard will not work. 3) – We will make the urauchis on Wenzhou paper and on specialized paper. 4) – You will be loaned the material and then you can buy the one that is best for you. But if you have ever made urauchi, you have it at home, you can bring it to learn how to use it in class. 5) – A glass bowl, ceramic bowl or flat tray where you can dissolve the paste and wet the brush. 6) – A “fuchi-fuchi” for water (sprayer) 7) – Wenzhou paper in a roll or a paper made of vegetable fibres that you have at home, but if possible, with a lighter weight than the paints you have chosen to make the urauchi. Remember that the second support (paper) must always be weaker than the one of the work to be mounted. This is a paper that is commonly used; We send it to you at this link and you can also get it in person at Bellas Artes Jeco (Calle de Pelayo, 38) Madrid https://www.amazon.es/Rollo-papel-Wenzhou-38-10/dp/B074KM6F2M/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1RNCUUSOG4LLA&keywords=papel wenzhou&qid=1686668649&sprefix=papel wenzhou,aps,126&sr=8-6 8) - A NOTEBOOK WHERE TO WRITE THE INFORMATION that will be a lot. --------------------------------------- DATE: Saturday, June 22, 2024 SCHEDULE: 10am to 2pm MAX CAPACITY: 8 people PLACE: Nicolás Morales 17, 1st Floor.
