The carp and the water poems

"The carp and the poems of water" "An old pond, a carp flicking a little red leaf" Tsuji Mitsuhiro

Monographic workshop aimed at intermediate-advanced level students in order to study the strokes that give life to Japanese painting and calligraphy based on one of the most emblematic animals of the Japanese tradition: the CARP (Koi). In the field of painting we work on a type of brushstroke that progressively varies its pressure at the same time as it develops in space, generating curves and counter-curves that define the central body of the carp. Later we work with the fine brush to describe the lines that provide the details to the general structure. The final objective of the workshop is to generate a group painting on paper support in roll format where all the carp can coexist in a pond.
In the field of calligraphy, we have selected a haiku by Tsuji Mitsuhiro, in order to train ourselves in writing with a fine brush and thus be able to work on the subtle transitions of pressure between one letter and another. The general objective of the workshop is to create a unique image in which painting and calligraphy coexist in the same space and refer to the carp as a theme. As always, and to finish the work, we place the stamp(s) on our pieces, making the fundamental principles of Eastern visual culture such as asymmetry, imperfection, immediacy, simplicity and plenitude be recorded on the infinity of the paper.
